Rodrigo Bacigalupe

PhD Student

Rodrigo completed his PhD in "Evolutionary Genomics of Bacterial Host-Adaptation and Outbreak Dynamics" in the Fitzgerald lab in 2018. His research spanned a number of different areas, including Population Genetics, Evolutionary Genomics, Adaptive Evolution, Short-term Adaptation, Transmission Dynamics, Within-host Variability and Bacterial Outbreaks.

He graduated  in Biology (Genetics and Microbiology) from the University of Salamanca in 2012. Then he obtained an MSc in Bioinformatics from the University of Edinburgh, where he did his Master's project on metagenomics assembly software under the supervision of Prof Mick Watson.  

Rodrigo's primary research interest is the adaptive evolution of bacterial pathogens in relation to the transmission dynamics between different niches, specifically humans, animals and the environment, and its impact on public health. His main methodologic approaches involve genomic data analysis, phylogenetics, epidemiology and bioinformatics.

Following his PhD, Rodgrigo started work as a Post-doctoral scientist in Jeroen Raes lab in Vlaams Instituut voor Biotechnologie in Belgium.
